N-Type connectors
N-Type connectors - microwave connectors with an operating frequency range of up to 10-11 GHz. This connector type was developed in the early 1940s by Bell Laboratories (USA) and named "N" after the first letter of the author's last name - Paul Neill.
These were the first threaded connectors that met the reliability requirements of microwave links for medium power transmission and had high consistency in impedance, VSWR, and losses.
Today, N connectors (along with SMA) are the most commonly used RF connectors. The best connectors of this type have housings (with 0.625" threads) made of stainless steel and beryllium bronze or brass plated with gold, nickel, silver, or alloys called "white bronze."
The inner conductor is made of hardened beryllium. The dielectric of the coaxial cable is made of fluoroplastic and has a VSWR (min = 1.05) in the frequency range up to 10-11 GHz.
Technical data of N-Type connectors:
- impedance 50 ohm
- allowable power W (at a frequency of GHz) 2000 (0.1), 600 (1), 150 (10)
- VSWR value min 1.05, max. 1.3 for direct and 1.5 for angled connectors
- RF loss level dB 0.15 and 0.3 for angled connectors at a frequency of 2 to 3 GHz
- rated voltage peak - 1 kV, breakdown voltage - 2 kV
- minimum insulation resistance - 5000 megohms
- operating temperature range -65 ... +165 C
N-type connectors differ:
- N male and N female, straight and angled
- type of connector attachment - instrumental and cable
- the diameter of connected coaxial cable - from 3 mm to 10 mm and more;
- the installation of connected coaxial cable - screwed onto the cable, crimped with a clamping screw, soldered.
Adapters and spacers are also available. These adapters have an N-type female or male connector on one side and a mating connector for another type of connector on the other side.
N-type connectors are widely used in various RF and microwave equipment - filters, transceivers, measuring and matching equipment, radar equipment, telecommunications and communication systems, etc.
